Get Road-Ready: Your No-Stress Guide to Nailing DOT Inspections

Spring’s here — which means longer days, better driving weather, and yes, time to make sure your truck’s as ready for the road as you are. Just like we do spring cleaning at home (or at least pretend to), this season is also perfect for a little rig refresh. Why? Because DOT inspections can happen anytime, anywhere — and being prepared is your best defense.

🧰 Start with Solid Pre- and Post-Trip Inspections

These daily checks are a must. Take a few minutes before and after every haul to walk around your truck and trailer. Catching a small issue early is way better than being parked at a weigh station with an out-of-service tag.

💡 Light It Up Right

Burned-out bulbs are one of the most common reasons trucks get flagged. Test your headlights, brake lights, turn signals, high beams, and hazards — front and back. If anything’s dim or dead, swap it out before hitting the road.

🛞 Don’t Skimp on Tire Checks

Tires take a beating — give them some love. Check your tread depth, look for uneven wear, and keep your pressure where it should be. Pro tip: underinflated tires aren’t just dangerous — they’re also a DOT favorite for violations.

📄 Keep Your Docs Tight

Your license and medical card should be current and easy to grab. Same goes for your logbooks (paper or ELD), registration, insurance, and inspection stickers. Having your paperwork organized makes the inspection smoother for everyone.

🛢 Sniff Out Any Leaks

Fuel, oil, coolant — if it’s leaking, it’s a problem. Look over all your hoses and lines, and keep an eye out for any drips or stains underneath the truck. Top off your fluids while you're at it and make sure your HVAC systems are working properly.

🛑 Give Your Brakes the Attention They Deserve

Test your air brakes and parking brake. Look for worn pads or anything that feels off. Brakes are one of the most inspected systems — and one of the most important for your safety.

🔧 Trailer + Cargo Check

From your frame and suspension to mudflaps and push rods, give the trailer a good inspection. And don’t forget to double-check your cargo securement — everything should be strapped in and tight.

🧽 Clean Cab = Good Vibes

It might sound minor, but a clean cab can set the tone for your whole inspection. Make sure your seatbelt, horn, and wipers work properly. Toss the trash, wipe things down, and keep it tidy.
